Is it too cliché for me to admit that my favourite author is Stephen King?

I know that everyone and their cousins have a hard-on for Mr. King's works. I guess there's just something about the guy's stuff that sticks out as being somehow more special than any other average general fiction sort of writer. Maybe it's a little lame of me to fall in to this crowd, but I can't help it.

I grew up reading Mr. King's books, so I guess that to me, they're childhood favourites. I was inspired greatly by his works. He's a pretty big part of what caused me to stick with writing through the tougher times in my life.

Does anyone else have a favourite author that they rarely like to admit to admiring?

I have only ever once admitted to liking Fannie Flag.

King is a great inspiration. Also "The Stand" was one of the best books ever written.

"The Stand" isn't actually one of my favorites. I lean more towards his short story collections and non-fiction stuff. "Tommyknockers" and "Four Past Midnight" are favorites because they're the first ones I ever read. I hold the Bachman books up as his crowning achievements in literature, though.. those ones are just somehow more unleashed than his usual or recent work.

Everything's Eventual is the best out of the short Stories I think. Of course that is the first book of his I ever read so...

Yeah the Bachman bit was some of his best work. I think it was because he didn't have to be Stephen King when he wrote them.

Everything's Eventual is my personal favourite of his short story collections, as well. If ever I met the guy, I'd want him to sign my copy.

I'd kiss his shoes. That man is a God.

I don't think I'd go quite that far. Actually, I wrote him a letter once. I never sent it, I just put it on the internet.

Another good one is Misery. The psychology of the antagonist is amazing.

I've heard that that one was supposed to be a Bachman book. I'd believe it considering it's got the unleashed feeling to it.

It has a neat style. A writer gets kidnapped by his biggest fan. Most chapters are parts of a novel the the fan is forcing him to write. It's amazing.

I'd lend you my copy but it had the first two chapters ripped out when we moved.

Why were they ripped out? Who did that?

I've read Misery before.. but quite a long time ago.

I don't know. I can't remember. I think the copy just got old and the glue just loosened. I stopped caring when my family destroys my stuff, a long time ago, L. I don't question it anymore. Besides the novel still has all the creepy parts, so I still reread it.

Maybe for Christmas or something, I'll spring for a new copy for you.

Personally, I don't like King's work. I just find it too predictable, in terms of the basic plot. But I must admit, he is an expert at imagery.

I'm one of those people who never seem to be able to guess the obvious. I think that's why I liked Christie a lot.. I never could guess what was coming next, even though all of her stories followed a general formula.

I guess it's not so much the plot as the way the guy writes that has be hooked. He can write something as kooky as Koontz does and still somehow make it come out seeming epic and interesting. The man has talent for what he does, even if some of his stuff seems a little acid-trippy.
